SANRAL: N2 Roadworks

Job Summary

The Project

After the floods in April 2022 the road as well as a section of the adjacent natural ground collapsed, caused by a void under the surface. Big5 Engineering was appointed to construct an emergency lane 466m long with a two percent sloping gradient. Within a tight schedule of five weeks.

The Challenge

Water found to be seeping out of the excavated surface at reached rock level creating the worst possible condition for a road to be constructed on.

The Solution

The emergency lane included the preparation and laying of geofabric fiber which helped in preventing the underground water to seep up to the surface of the road. A backfill of 600mm rockfill was implemented to provide stability for the ongoing traffic. Followed by a G5 gravel layer of 200mm processed and compacted to project specification. Asphalt base layer of 150mm and capping of 50mm also followed respectively.
